The problem of prejudice (option 1)
Prejudice is a big problem in today’s world. Not only does it occur daily, but many sources encourage prejudice and allow it to flow in and out of people’s mouth daily. In many of today’s movies, songs, comedic performances, books, and painting, racial stereotypes are present in front of an audience. Regardless of how funny it is, it contributes to the problem of prejudice. An example could be in a movie, where a racial joke is said. Kids often remember it because it’s funny and then repeat it to other classmates. In our generation, many rap songs contain the words “nigga, bitches, hoes, sluts,” as well as many other derogatory words. From race to gender to sexuality to religion, many different forms of art portray people as different terms. In the past, propaganda was drawn during war times to make people think that certain people weren’t liked. The continuation of prejudice causes jokes and false assumptions of people.

Thesis: Today, various forms of art are a cause of our world not being able to achieve world peace.

Option 4 –
What are some of the consequences of judging someone on his/her physical appearance?

Artistic expression or art of any form should never have hindrances. However, since a person’s appearance is what defines his or her individuality, sometimes, even that form of expression forces restraints upon them. It’s horrible how people are already limited to the things that they can do or say and now there are even standards enforced upon the way a person looks or dresses as well. More often than not what one wears does hold an influence on what people think or judgments they make; most of which are bad. For example, there are many ways in which a person should or should not present themselves to be taken seriously or look professional. If a person with visible tattoos or piercings were to be interviewed for a job, it’s unfortunate that anything they have on a resume and all their previous experiences would come second to how they look.

Thesis: We now live in a superficial society in which you’re judged or defined by your appearance first and above all else and because of that we’re not even free to look or dress the way we want without having to think about the negative consequences that go along with it.

Option 4: Do you find it troubling that your appearance can have a strong influence on what people think of you? What are the consequences of judging people solely by their appearance? (I see it as really one question)

Things I would like to talk about: How physical appearance can give some one the wrong impression and the flip side of how a person can develop incorrect stereotypes. This is tied in with how people think of you. The business world is where I think that the ill-conceived notions brought on by appearance can have the most effect on a person. Physical appearance can be affected by anything. This includes things like: clothing, neatness of self, height, weight, race, age, coloring, jewelry, stance, etc. Some aspects are favorable like seeming confident and reliable. But very often we are judged by how we fall short of the ideal images and what stereotypes are associated with that. Many sides of business are influenced by these preconceived notions, as employer, client, or affiliate. For example: a taller person is perceived as being more successful or person dressed in all black as being dangerous / unstable.

Thesis: How personal appearance affects the business world and how it hurts it.

(Option 1)Music has power to change human's mood in order to reduce our pressure. Different kinds of music can give people different moods. If people want to relax after a stressful day, they should play some peaceful music. There is my own experience about getting benefits from music. I took a dance class last semester. Without music, I felt my body weighed a ton, and it was out of my control. When our dancing professor played the upbeat music later, I felt my body full of energy and kept dancing. The upbeat song can influence people to have a cheerful attitude. Therefore, music has many good effects on people psychologically and it can heal the prejudiced problem in our society.

Thesis: music has the power to heal the prejudiced problem in our society.

Option 4: Personal appearance as artistic expression

Freewrite:
Art is a mixture of creativity and expression. What we wear and how we choose to appear is artwork. If a picture is worth a thousand words, than what is the message we are sending to others through our attire and how we present ourselves? Clothing and accessories can often make a permanent first impression. What we wear can also change our views of ourselves. We paint a picture every day for those who we expect to encounter. In another's eyes we often are what we wear. For the better, or for the worse, our apparel usually speaks louder than our words. Whether perceived in a positive or negative light, what we wear is an expression of who we are.

Thesis: Personal appearance is truly a work of art. How we choose to display ourselves can and often does define who we are before we get a chance to.

(option 4) What are some of the consequences of judging someone on his/her physical appearance?

Many adults hope that their children understand the inner beauty is the most important thing before they judge a person. Therefore, over the years, a lot of the classical stories emphasize to look beneath the surface of a person. For example, in the fairy tale story of “Beauty and the Beast”, Beast is unattractive and hideous; however, despites his ugliness, Beauty truly looks into his inner beauty and eventually loves him. When people only see things and someone by their physical appearance, often times it will cause bigoted, greedy, and jealousy. Some people look at the wealth of a person, or even the appearance of their beauty. (…to be continued)

Thesis: Judging people on their physical appearance will result in negative consequences.

The racist and demeaning portrayal of Hispanic immigrants advertised on television is filled with negative and destructive stereotypes that exploit the Mexican American people; they are depicted as poor, ignorant, and illegal citizens, and so the public misconception seems to be that all Mexican’s must have jobs as: gardeners, house cleaners, or fruit pickers. The fast food chain Taco Bell has used various racial slogans within their myriad of television campaigns. One such particular and popular ad was “Run for the Border.” The other commercial featured a Mexican Chihuahua saying “Yo Quiero Taco Bell.” These fictitious and offensive images should be censored and abolished because it is biased and it oppresses the Mexican American public by deeming them inferior and uneducated. I feel that a change has to occur within the minds of the people who are watching these insulting television ads, the mass public gets brainwashed by these negative images, and so the prejudice and racism, and classism continues with turbulent repercussions of on going segregation and hatred,
Future society should be required to have a voice in banning racial propaganda from television and the advertisement world.

Thesis: The media and advertising world is to blame for the racist and twisted outlook on how Americans perceive Mexican immigrants in the U.S., legal or illegal. A change should be made, so that Hispanic groups are protected and not heckled and belittled, and that more positive images of their culture are portrayed within advertisements and the mass media.

Option Two ~ Writing as a solution
An English novelist Edward George Bulwer Lytton once wrote “The pen is mightier than the sword.” And as a young American living in a country which at the very core and foundation is purely based pieces of writing written hundred of years ago I strongly believe in Mr. Lytton’s statement. Writing is not only a substantial part of everyway life, communication, history, and art. Writing is a irrepressible part of human nature to express a burning desire inside to create realms of literacy beyond one individual’s imagination and bridge gaps too far for hands to hold. And as internal and external wars wage on in this chaotic but beautiful world of ours sometimes I truly think writing could be a very real but often times overlooked solution. Peace can be obtained through a the art of writing. The greatest treaties of peace were written by countries congregated in search of just. And like the Alien land law acts, Jim Crow Laws that came along with the more discouraging and dark times of our country and world’s history were written in laws and books; all the only proves the effective power of word’s strung together with one motivation to harm or to heal.

Thesis: Peace can be obtained through a the art of writing.

In our fast pace society where appearance is everything, judging things and people quickly by how they look has become commonplace. Unfortunately, this limits our potential of truly knowing one another, could damage relationships, and leads to serious acts of prejudice. Our past has examples of this, such as the enslavement of African Americans based on the color of their skin, or the unfair treatment of innocent Middle easterners who, after the events of 9/11, were accused of being terrorists because of their appearance. The effects can also be as simple as a child being picked last in gym because they are short, or store clerks watching a teenager suspiciously in a store to make sure they don’t steal. The term “don’t judge a book by its cover” is cliché, but its message is in the right place. People shouldn’t be judged based on how they look, but by how they act and what is on the inside.

Thesis: People have been trained to judge others based solely on outside appearances, which can lead to damaging prejudice, unfair opinions, and treatment.

Your thesis is great, Ernest: you will easily be able to form paragraphs on the types of art you refer to and their effects

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Joyce, your idea is strong and arguable. Try to edit down the thesis so it is a little more simlpe. You can say all you say in the intro, but your thesis should be very simple- a line or two.

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Tina- good to focus on one small area. Joyce, you might think about that too unless you plan to develop several areas in several paragraphs/

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Wai- good thesis. just take off the "d" in prejudiceD- you don't need that since you are using prejudice as a noun, not an adjective

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Ken- nice wording. Think about how you will prve that, maybe concentrating on the places we go where we get judged, and how that effects us

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Shirley- perfect thesis. See my advice to Ken on how to prove it.

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Yvette, the thesis is a little long. you can say all you say in the intro and body, but try to pair the thesis itself down to a line or two since the paper is not going to be very long. Let me know if you need help simplifying it

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Jaquie- looks powerful. My only suggestion is to make the thesis ACTIVE instead of passive. WHO can obtain peace? As written, no one is doing the verb so the statement has less power than it could have

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Looks good, Sabrina. See my advice to Ken on how to prove your statement

Option#1: The problem of prejudice:

Unfortunately, prejudice exists in our society. Stereotyping is a main form of being prejudice and being discriminated against. It is very sad to see such great Americans who feed themselves with such error. An example of a stereotype is, an individual who has had several encounters with law is officially considered a criminal, and will never be able to turn his life around. However, is it really ones fault that they don’t know better? Is it there fault, possibly on how they were raised on how to believe and view certain issues in America, that they do stereotype? Yes and no. One would be surprised if they only knew how many people have turned there lives around, regardless of what they went through in life.

Thesis: Due to various forms of being prejudice, such as stereotyping, this has caused many individuals to label and misjudge others.

Option 4: personal appearance as artistic expression
I first started my education in a catholic private school, where we had to wear uniforms. I know they probably had good intentions and reasons of their own for making us wear them, for instance preventing people from showing off their status by their clothing, gang related clothing (thought I don’t know how that would apply in kindergarten, but then again who knows?), or wearing obscene things. I didn’t mind really because I was young and not concerned with my appearance. But when I reached 6th grade I transferred to a public school, where uniforms were not required. It was then that I started thinking about why I had to wear a uniform in the first place and the drawbacks that occurred. I like expressing my individuality, and a way of expressing it is my style of clothing. It was very liberating to be able to wear what I wanted, more or less, to school. I don’t have a specific “style” or method to my madness when choosing my outfits. I have many tastes and I don’t like to stick to one specific style. So for other people to judge me on what I wear on any given day is not an accurate depiction of who I really am.

Thesis:
Being judged based on physical appearance is often misleading and can result in having an incorrect opinion of people.

the consequences of judging people on their physical appearance (option 4)
Judging people on their physical appearance is harmful within society. Yet, people still judge others by what they look like. As an example, let say we meet this messy hair girl wearing the old fashion clothes and shoes with braces on her teeth and big old
style glasses on her eyes. what would be your first impression of her? you might think she is a geek and is certainly not the type of girl i look for to be my friend or girlfriend. The reason is clear, her physical appearance is not attractive and her style is so years ago. Then people tend to withdraw themselves from her because she is not what you called a "cool" person to hang out with. As another example, color people are usually considered a dangerous people to deal with. I have always been told, "you better be careful of them! they are such a monster!". i've been told that color people are annoying and bothersome, and they have done too many crimes. since we have been told many times about this thing, we tend to withdraw ourselves from color people for the reason of safety. If people didn't realize that by prejudicing others they ruining others' lives as well, they should realize it now. Because, the consequences of this action is very negative. And one of the consequences is that you misjudge others without even know who they are.

Thesis : the consequences of this prejudice action are obviously negative. one of them is misjudging.

thesis: In today's world, people should learn to care their physical appearance and behaviors.

option 4

Judging a person by his or her physical appearance is necessary, especially in today’s world. Although someone may say, “Beauty is but SKIN-deep.” But everyone at least should know how to dressing themselves. Why there are some classes teach you how to public manners and how to dressing? If you are major in International Business, you have to learn how to dress and speak. If you are doing a business with a guy who have a mess dress, will you have the courage to trust at him? Do you believe at him? Judging a guy by his first look is not correct. But this is a fact truly exist in our world. When you are going to have a interview, will you care what to wear in that interview day?
No one won’t waste some times dressing himself or herself, expect the people who can’t handle their normal life.

It is only when the mind and character slumber that the dress can be seen.
R.W.Emerson
If you are a normal guy in today’s world, you should know how to dress yourself. Though it is not important, but not that level you can ignore it.

Admittedly, in most cases, defining a person with their looking, hairstyles and clothes will have many negative results. We can't judge a tree by its bark. Clothes do not make the man. Judging a person on his or her physical appearance will hurt that him or her. Unfortunate, it may destroy all his/her life because of hearsay. Bad things always spread wildly.

(OPTION 4)

Imagine that your eyes could only see in two dimensions. Would it be safe to say what lied in the third dimension? Similarly, in our three dimensional world, our eyes are limited. We can only see space in the X, Y, and Z fields. Our eyes cannot tell us anything about a person other than the wave lengths of light they are reflecting. To judge anything else would be irrational. Returning to the 2-d example, what could happen if you assumed you had 30 feet to stop until you hit the edge of a cliff when in reality you only had 5? Ouch. Returning to the real world you can see that judging without the proper tools is simply, madness. Hence, the current state of our world. The negative effects of using our eyes as a tool to see beyond the three dimensional world is almost as obvious as two plus two. From a micro view of individual relationships to a macro view of international relationships judging by appearance has had a negative effect on the progress of the world.

From there id separate into 4 or 5 paragraphs. Two micro Two Macro and conclusion I guess. And as a support for the argument I guess Id include how even if judged correctly with the eyes it makes more sense to use the proper tools rather than roll the dice.

Option 4
Last time I checked, we all had similar bodily characteristics, and a fairly alike way of carrying ourselves out through this world, i.e. eating with our mouths and communicating; not to say we’re all the same, but we do fall under the category of ‘humans’. Basing someone off the way they look, specifically if you base someone off their race or ethnicity enforces the division that we as humans are slowly and perhaps unconsciously creating. Stereotyping, in sense, represents a skill that we as humans have in order to survive, i.e. “Is it safe to walk by that person? Perhaps I should move to the other side of the street.” In this sense we may save ourselves from an uncanny argument that could lead to something worse. We build up the background of these stereotypes with the experience we gain throughout our lives, and as stated, they may server as a tool of defense when we take a midnight stroll. As positive as this is, there is a turning point in a life of a person where the may grow tired of fearing a certain other type of person, and that fear may began to twist into hate. One should be aware of this turning point before a certain appearance is permanently burned into their head with a big red “feared and/or hated” sign. Basing people off their appearance, as helpful as can be, also may create a fortress between races or groups with different appearances.

Thesis: Our current society has learned to base people off their personal appearance, although this represents a window to their personality, it also positions future races and groups of people a certain stereotypical sets.

Option 3

A memory frozen in time, captured on paper;a photo serves as reminders of the past. In some cultures it is believed that having your picture taken will reduce your life span or capture your soul, it is also taboo to take pictures of the dead. Living in the age of technology there are millions of albums at your fingertip. On the internet there is a variety of images from flowers, bird, and bees to naked celebrities. Paparazzi or photographing bounty hunters are paid top dollars for the "money shot", this could be capturing photos of public figures in compromising situation to tragedies. There is a line between making a living and invading privacy; a line photographers often don't respect. There are millions of images that may be deemed inappropriate such as a pop-up window of an intimate couple on a child's computers or a dissected human corpse. I think that access to photos should be allowed and uncensored granted the subject or next of kin consents, some images although disturbing can be served a reminder, a teaching, an art.

Thesis: Controversial images should be uncensored if given proper rights.

Irela- I completely agree. I want you now to try to narrow the thesis down: where in the world are you targeting? Next, think about the wording of the thesis: the way it is currently worded is knd of unclear. Try reading it aloud to see if you can simplify

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Melanie- looks good. I would try to prove it by exploring the places we go that we see and judge people, and the limits we set by doing so

Anna Marie Hibble said...

Stef- I agree. Now for your thesis, work on your wording. The syntax is not super clear; maybe reading it aloud will help you simplify?

Opinion 2
People write, and they all study how to write, and that is because writing has always solved problems that people had in many ways in the old days and even in our scientific age, and now, writing has become the best way to connect one to another. In my country, Japan, people use a text message more than to call because it is convenience, they don’t have to bother the receiver, and most importantly, people can express themselves by writing better than by speaking. What’s really inside of their heart is often hard to say. Then, blog has become so popular for people to show their lives by writing to connect with their friends and to make new friends. And in spite of those technological developments, people still write with a pen especially when celebrating the others; such as birthday cards, Christmas cards, and everybody writes Happy New Year cards in my country; because there is nothing else that makes the receiver feel so worm, and they last forever as remembrances. People may actually write much more than they think they do because that is a part of their lives. People need to be connected to each other in order to live, and writing helps it: writing is a essential pillar for people’s life.

Thesis: People’s relationships are sustained by writing in this scientific age.

Writing is only one of the different ways for persuading somebody, telling a story, or showing some thoughts. You can use different methods: through literature, songs, or even writing of letters. All that serves for improving communication what can increase your chance to be successful in life.

Writing as art can help us in communication and expressing yourself to make your life more successful..

Option Four
What are some of the consequences of judging someone on his/her physical appearance. State clearly whether these consequences are positive or negative.

Imagine that a person is crossing a street, he or she may glance the group passing by without any purpose. In this modern world, people aim at a high speed of life, which they judge people by observing their appearance and styles of clothing. For example, in the business world, employers hire their employees not only based on their speech and resumes, but also their tidiness, weight, height, clothing, and even hairstyles. The movie of the “Devil Wears Prada” is a perfect example to prove these points. However, it is a false value to look down on people according to their looks, which might cause negative consequences.

Thesis statement:
Judging people based on their look is impossible to predict their hidden personalities, which might cause negative consequences.
