Free Write for Essay (Option 1)

Art seems to be a subject which causes a lot of controversy in our world. It’s strange for me to think that people can spread such strong emotions through a song, poem, or painting. Long gone are the grammar school days when making a paper cut out turkey was considered art. Art is more responsible, art has power. Art can be used for good, and art can be used for bad. What is the influence of art on modern day society? If in songs a girl is referred to as a “bitch” or a “hoe” does that have an actual affect on society? Everyone has heard of art as an inspiration, writers look to other works to create new ones, people look to poetry to release emotions, and people use movies and plays to pay tribute to people. The real question comes in when we look at how art can bring negative things into the game such as racism or sexism. Art has the power to heal, but does it also have the power to inflict pain? In my own personal opinion I would say yes. I remember growing up going to a school up the street from Brandeis, a Jewish grammar school. One day arriving to school we witnessed swastikas drawn on the cement in front of their school. Those kids had to suck it up for the day and walk passed the hate into the school. It’s hard to imagine that art can cause so many great things and at the same time inflict so much pain.

Thesis: Through analyzing music from different genres, hip-hop, pop, and oldies, the listener can decipher how music is both positive and negative to our society.

Option 3 Free Write

The racist and demeaning portrayal of Hispanic immigrants advertised on television is filled with negative and destructive stereotypes that exploit the Mexican American people; they are depicted as poor, ignorant, and illegal citizens, and so the public misconception seems to be that all Mexican’s must have jobs as: gardeners, house cleaners, or fruit pickers. The fast food chain Taco Bell has used various racial slogans within their myriad of television campaigns. One such particular and popular ad was “Run for the Border.” The other commercial featured a Mexican Chihuahua saying “Yo Quiero Taco Bell.” These fictitious and offensive images should be censored and abolished because it is biased and it oppresses the Mexican American public by deeming them inferior and uneducated. I feel that a change has to occur within the minds of the people who are watching these insulting television ads, the mass public gets brainwashed by these negative images, and so the prejudice and racism, and classism continues with turbulent repercussions of on going segregation and hatred,
Future society should be required to have a voice in banning racial propaganda from television and the advertisement world.

Thesis: The media and advertising world is to blame for the racist and twisted outlook on how Americans perceive Mexican immigrants in the U.S., legal or illegal. A change should be made, so that Hispanic groups are protected and not heckled and belittled, and that more positive images of their culture are portrayed within advertisements and the mass media.

Jorge Lozada Jr.’s Outline

Thesis:
Our society has learned to base others solely off the way they appear; although this may serve as a window to a person’s personality, it also divides our society by permanently placing us into isolated stereotype groups. [Edited; ?]

Intro
Grabby: [Begin with a crazy fact]
Intro’s Main Idea: [Include thesis in someway] and introduce small ideas that support thesis branching from…
a) What is stereotyping? Why do people do it? Why does current day society do it?
b) Positives/Negatives of stereotyping.
c) How does it divide us?
d) What will this division lead to?

1st Body: Point… Thoroughly explain “a)” questions.
- Supporting detail, real definitions. Info.
- Explanation.
2nd Body: Point… Focus on positive/negative effects. “b)”.
- Introduce both positive and negative effects. Concrete details.
- Explanation/commentary.
3rd Body: Point… Elaborate on how we become divided. “c)”
- Details. Theory. People are pushed farther apart into groups.
- How fear and hate plays in. Explanation.
4th Body: Point… Division will lead to isolation. “d)”
- Perhaps describe a divided world.
- An undivided world (conclusion maybe).
- Explanation.
Conclusion: Focus on the point of how, although we do stereotype, and although stereotyping may never truly disappear from society, we as humans should work towards our unification and the awareness of these stereotypes. (Maybe I can make this concept into another body paragraph instead, and my conclusion can be based on exactly ‘how’ this can be achieved. Or I can combine… still deciding.)

Option 2
– Writing as a solution – outline
Thesis: Peace can be obtained by any individual through the empowerment of the art of writing.
Introduction –
Grabber: Quote “Pen is mightier than the sword”… a sentence to emphasize the importance of writing perhaps which should be leading into three main ideas. Also how writing is often undermined of it’s power to make changes.
1st main idea) Writing is a sanctuary for truth and history. Like years of war, violence, or history gone untold but solved with writing.
2nd main idea) Writing unites. Bridging gaps between people of different walks of life, generations, etc…
3rd main idea) Writing can be the ultimate weapon to attain world peace for any individual that chooses to do so. Fit in thesis somewhere here.
1st main idea) Writing is a sanctuary for truth and history. Like years of war, violence, or history gone untold but solved with writing.
Use examples of books published like Diary of Anne Frank, Rape of Nan King, etc. Will delve into Asian American history perhaps (I think you said it has to be race related right?) and make examples out of history in correlation to writing preserving history as a solution.
2nd main idea) Writing unites. Bridging gaps between people of different walks of life, generations, etc… I will elaborate on this with examples of author Adeline Yen Mah, my experience meeting her and use a interview perhaps of how she pieced together two worlds into one in her novels Falling Leaves and Chinese Cinderella.
3rd main idea) Writing can be the ultimate weapon to attain world peace for any individual that chooses to do so. Use Iris Chang as an example, before her death her research and books published to not only record down history in it’s entirety but to attain peace for an entire generation gone silenced in the silent holocaust. Also include my experience meeting her on several occasions, the annual Rape of Nan King remembrance and group for reparations and recognition from Japanese and US government perhaps.
Conclusion: Reiterate thesis while incorporating my reflections on my own feelings about writing and how it has empowered me and individuals around me to change the world in some small unique but of course significant way.

p1:A memory frozen in time, captured on paper;a photo serves as reminders of the past. In some cultures it is believed that having your picture taken will reduce your life span or capture your soul, it is also taboo to take pictures of the dead. Living in the age of technology there are millions of albums at your fingertip. On the internet there is a variety of images from flowers, bird, and bees to naked celebrities. Paparazzi or photographing bounty hunters are paid top dollars for the "money shot", this could be capturing photos of public figures in compromising situation to tragedies. There is a line between making a living and invading privacy; a line photographers often don't respect. There are millions of images that may be deemed inappropriate such as a pop-up window of an intimate couple on a child's computers or a dissected human corpse. I think that access to photos should be allowed and uncensored granted the subject or next of kin consents, some images although disturbing can be served a reminder, a teaching, an art.
