Welcome

Welcome to English 100 Honors, fall 2007 at Skyline College.

Here we will meet when we do not meet in class. You will aslo post outlines, homework, and comments here, but be sure to always write your name on your posting since otherwise your comments will be marked anonymous and I can't give you credit.

I'll also attach important class documents and the schedule of assignments so you can always keep up. You'll never need to ask: "What's the homework?" since the answer is right here.

The photograhic work of Isis Cherrise has the power to heal the scars of the many women who allow themeselves to succum to the idea of an "ideal" body image. In our society, we are bombarded with narrow images of what it is to be beautiful. There is scarcely a girl between the ages of five and ninety-five who doesn't judge her body, and think of some way it should be altered and improved. This can have devastaing effects on our overall self-esteem.. and many women allow themeselves to be held "hostage" as the media dictates how they should look. This is evident with rising numbers of eating disorders(?) and a pre-occupation with youth and plastic surgery. Images , which embrace the beauty of women of diverse backgrounds, shapes and sizes not only expands our notion of what it is to be beautiful, but gives us mirrors in which more of us see our own beauty reflected. (There have been recent positive influences in themain- stream media like the ad campaign for Dove). These reflections have the power to heal. Not only is ISis"s work healing for the viewer, the very process heals the subjects of her photos as well. Along with the visual images of a diverse group of women, Isis's shares their accounts of being photogrphed nude... and what it took to bring them in front of the camera.
